former apple laptop
What’s the difference between a Macbook Pro and a Powerbook G4?

I have a apple powerbook G4 (A1095). It’s got MAC OS X 10.3.6 running on it and I wanna update to a new operating system. My step got it off ebay and it came with the laptop itself and a charger only, nothing else. No install or restore disk. It also came with a password on it from the former owner who I can no longer get into contact with preventing me from being able to download anything or update anything. I was looking on ebay for install disks for tiger or leapord but I can’t find anything for a Powerbook G4 only for Macbooks… Is there a difference and what can I install on it. The CPU Type is -PowerPC G4 (1.1) CPU Speed is -1.33 GHz Memory is -256 MB
Please help me and contact me if you need anymore information!

You need to be careful about the way you word your answers. I thought you were asking what the difference was between a PowerMac G4 and a Macbook Pro.
Is this the 12, 15, or 17 inch model? To upgrade the OS, you will need to add memory. The 12 inch model has a single slot that will take a maximum of 1GB, bringing it to 1.256MB. The 15 and 17 will take two 1 GB in two slots.

The Leopard Disc will not boot well until you add memory. Add memory first. And Leopard is the last OS that will work with a PowerPC Mac. Don’t get an install CD that is for a specific Mac unless it is for your model. The restore CD for a Macbook will work only with that model.

Your second step is what you have already figured out. Get an OS install disc. Boot from that disc by holding the C key during startup. Once it is booted, you will be able to use a menu item to reset your password.

One very very important thing to know is that since you don’t have the discs the Powerbook came with, you have no way of restoring your full configuration if the hard drive fails. Go out first thing tomorrow and buy an external hard drive that is at least twice the capacity of the one in the Powerbook. Copy the entire Powerbook hard drive to that drive.

iLife does not come on the OS discs. They will be in the backup that you must make. Even the drivers for the DVD-ROM drive needed to play movies will be only on the backup.

If you contact Apple, you might be able to get a copy of the discs that should have come with the Powerbook, but it will cost, assuming they have they to sell. it’s worth a try.
