Japanese Schools May Drop Windows and Switch to Linux HP Already Shipping Linux in Masse

In Windsor, California, District IT administrator Heather Carver is migrating the district’s 70 servers and most of its 5,000 PCs to SUSE Linux and Wyse Linux thin-client terminals. When complete they will have 2,000 SUSE Linux Desktops, and 2,700 Linux thin clients.

Miss Carver’s quote when concerning the children’s ability to use a new a OS and software.

“The kids, well, they adjust to new operating systems and applications very quickly, so a changeover to Linux is no big deal.”

She is also talking with another district to share her success and resources in order to help each other.

So far, the migration from Windows to Linux has progressed smoothly, Carver told DesktopLinux.com. Next, she hopes to start branching out with her migration setup to other school districts.

“I’ve been talking to Cloverdale (a neighboring town and district). It makes sense for us to share resources and help each other,” Carver concluded. “
