Not to be outdone by Dell, HP has started shipping computers in Australia with Redhat Linux, OpenOffice and Firefox installed. They also plan to expand the offering to others countries, and maybe even United States. Perhaps the water is finally start to flow over the dam and Microsoft will not be able to stop it?

“Enterprise Linux 10 for its desktop computers, but has only recently started to evaluate the advantages of offering Linux preinstallation options on a large scale

I am waiting for the next attack from Microsoft on Linux. Maybe the upfront in your face attacks are over, and we will now see the more subtle “EEE” Embrace Extend and Extinguish tactics that they have perfected.

Drive a company into bankruptcy, get a bonus! Can’t say that I’m that surprised given their track record.  Pamela Jones at groklaw.net goes into a lot of detail. SCO 8-k filing is also here on yahoo.

Item 5.02 Departure of Directors or Certain Officers; Election of Directors; Appointment of Certain Officers; Compensatory Arrangements of Certain Officers. On September 13, 2007, the Board of Directors (the “Board”) of The SCO Group, Inc. (the “Company”), approved an increase in the base salary of Ryan E. Tibbitts. Mr. Tibbitts’ base salary will be increased from $160,000 per year to $210,000 per year, effective as of September 3, 2007. In recognition of the significant contributions Mr. Tibbitts has made to the Company, the Board also approved a discretionary bonus of $50,000, net of taxes, to be paid to Mr. Tibbitts.

The largest state run pharmacy in Sweden has decided to replace its all if its existing IT infrastructure at its 900 pharmacies with Redhat Enterprise Linux on Intel servers. Because they deal with people’s health they wanted a system that they could really rely on. Isn’t that what we all want?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in combination with the new hardware, brings several advantages to Apoteket including low cost of ownership, solid performance and a large selection of software and open source alternatives that enhance development opportunities.

They must have forgot to read Microsoft’s “Get the Facts” campaign.

After almost 3 years of SCO “shell game” the hammer has finally dropped, and SCO has declared bankruptcy to protect its customers (snicker, snicker). The ironic part of this complete fiasco is that Novell, might be entitled to SCO’s original “licensing” fees that it initially received to fund this whole production. This occurs just after an interview 4 days ago on Sept 10 when Darl said Darl Mcbridge

All of our product business is really unaffected by this ruling, other than the noises in our market places.

Remember customers, he is doing this all to protect you.

One of the largest food retailers in Scandinavia has made the switch and is standardizing its IT infrastructure on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.  A quote from Rolf Berge the production manger at Axfood.

“Axfood has very high demands on availability and performance. We chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux because it is a cost-efficient and safe platform for us to grow on.”

The one word that caught my attention from the quote was “safe” .  It is different than the standard reasons of “cost-efficient”, “performance”, and “availability”.  We’re all used to hearing those.  “Safe” is how I feel when applications are running on Linux, “Safe” is how I feel about performance and uptime,   “Safe” is how I feel that an automatic update will not crash the machine.

IBM has announced that it will be joining the OpenOffice.org community by making initial code contributions that it has been developing for Lotus Notes, as well as ongoing contributions.   Should also be noted that IBM will be dedicating around 35 programmers to the effort.

“IBM is very pleased to be joining the OpenOffice.org community. We are very optimistic that IBM’s contribution of technology and engineering resources will provide tangible benefits to the community membership and to users of OpenOffice.org technology around the world,” said Mike Rhodin, General Manager of IBM’s Lotus division.

To avoid vendor lock-in and avoid forced upgrade cycles of proprietary solutions the French Ministry has selected open source solutions to equip all of its local education authorities.  This would account for around 2,500 servers at 30 locations.

“In 2004, over 95 percent of the servers ran on Linux. Today we are close to 100 percent, since we withdrew the last AIX servers at the end of 2006,” said Affre.

Seems like a great success story to me, hope to hear about more of them!

The Microsoft “Flash Killer” plug-in is soon to be available on Linux.

Microsoft confirmed that it will work with Novell to deliver Silverlight support for Linux, called Moonlight, based on the project started on mono-project.com.

Probably, what  amazes me most is the fact that Microsoft would dedicate any amount of time and money developing and releasing software for Linux.  Microsoft spends a ton of money telling you why Linux is awful, and why they just might sue the pants off you if you decide to use it.  However behind the scenes they are developing and releasing software for Linux.  So if Linux is such an inferior platform, why would they even bother releasing software for it?

All speculation and rumor right now, but the Google Linux Phone might just become reality at around $100. If this is true, I will be line for it.

Google gphone

I am finding that Google is becoming and indispensable part of my business and personal life. Still trying to decide if this bad or good.
