Linux is expected to out pace all other Smartphone operating systems and have an annual growth rate in excess of 75%.  It estimated that in 2012 Linux will be on 31% of all Smartphone devices. Prediction made by ABIResearch.

“Linux is benefiting from growing support in the handset OEM community, most notably Motorola, but also Nokia with less traditional types of devices aimed at mobile broadband applications.” The rise of mobile broadband and the impact that this has upon device convergence and format plays into the hands of Linux.

HP and Redhat have joined forces and will be shippng the dx2250 HP work station with Firefox, Open Office, and Evolution email client in Australia. First was Dell and now HP, things are starting to look promising for Linux on the desktop now that the major hardware suppliers are testing the waters.  Covered by ZDENT.UK

Around 560,000 students in 33 German Universities will soon be running SuSe Linux Enterprise Desktop Platform! Covered at ComputerWeekly.

The move is designed to give the colleges a cheaper sytem whilst also giving them a more flexible IT architecture when compared to other proprietary software.

I think universities in the United States should be sending some of their IT guys to Germany to see how well this is going to work out.  A definite thumbs up to Germany and Novell!

Singapore airlines is differentiating itself from other airlines by adding a PC running Redhat Linux to every seat including the economy class seats.  What really separates this offering from any other airline is they are NOT charging for it!

Unlike many U.S. airlines, the carrier doesn’t view in-flight service as a cost center where cutbacks can be made to reduce losses or boost profits. Instead, Singapore Airlines’ latest investments in cabin service are designed to help it stand out from the competition and attract more passengers

Microsoft in a surprising move, has taken down its biggest Linux bashing site to date. Not sure if its feedback from users, that want unbiased information or the fact the Microsoft is now taking the stance that it supports open source software development. It was a long time in coming. But Microsoft has finally acknowledged that its anti-Linux site had gone past the point of usefulness.

Russian software developers are coming to the aid of the Russian education system en masse. The number of specialists in the alliance that are helping already surpass the number of supporters in Mandriva and Ubuntu.

CNews found out, ALT Linux, Linux-Online, Naumen, Etersoft and the system integrator Center created and alliance to jointly participate in tenders to supply open source software to Russian schools

Norway has the opened the first in a series of centers across the country to help business and government agencies adopt and benefit from open source software. The first was opened in Drammen near Oslo.

 Norwegian companies, organizations, and government can profit from increased use of Open Source. Business managers can increase the revenue of their companies by using Open Source software in their operations

Electronics giant Casio Computer is reducing costs and consolidating servers by using XEN virtualization and Suse Linux Enterprise server. Basically they are able to reduce software and hardware costs by combining many underutilized hardware servers images on a single physical server. A quote from Norihito Kuniyoshi, managing director of Casio Information Service Co. Ltd.

“Based on our initial results, we estimate the software cost of Xen and SUSE Linux Enterprise for virtualizing Windows systems is just 10 percent of competitor solutions”

Concurrent a leading provider of time critical Linux Operating systems has announced that the Naval Warfare Center has selected it RedHawk reak-time Linux for it missle simulation application.

The missile simulator for use by NSWC Crane based on a Concurrent iHawk is another example of the U.S. Navys selection of RedHawk Linux for its real-time needs, said Gary Beerman, Marketing Director, Concurrent. Already deployed in the Aegis Weapons Systems program, RedHawk is rapidly becoming a de facto real-time Linux operating system for Navy programs.
