IT Manager Paul Wheeler has successfully replaced the city’s Cisco gear with 2 Vyatta Inc Routers that run Debian Linux.

In a more dramatic money-saving move, the city did a complete network upgrade to implement a voice-over-IP system based on Asterisk, an open-source PBX system from Digium Inc. in Huntsville, Ala. The Asterisk VoIP system cost about $120,000, whereas a Cisco system would have run about $400,000, he said.

A good switch over story, anyone in the Government should spend a few minutes reading the entire story.

Yes, you read the headline correctly.  The same company that once called Open Source a “cancer” now embraces it, and in fact has opened a site to tout their commitment to Open Source. Still don’t believe it.

“By embracing diverse application development approaches and partner business models, Microsoft participates in a world of choice in which individuals and organizations can pursue their goals based on what uniquely inspires them, including open source.”

So if open source and Linux are cancers that erode value in the world, why does Microsoft now support it?

Linux is still gaining ground despite Microsoft efforts. In order to stay competitive Motorola has realized the product development has to move quickly, and that Linux provides the vehicle to do this, in fact all of their advanced technology development is done on Linux says Mark VandenBrink, a Motorola fellow and chief architect of systems software at the company.

“At Motorola, 60% of its phones are built on a Linux platform, but it is just one of the companies embracing Linux as a way to build handsets, run servers and desktop computers and deliver other technology.”

I guess someone should send them to the Microsoft get the facts site, so they can learn that they are completely wrong by doing this. Who are you going to believe?
